Tucked away near our little town of Shawnigan Lake lies a hidden, sacred place our people have used for healing for many generations.

The Elders bring each other and the youth there to cleanse away the buildup of toxic energy that causes illness and emotional problems.

This is a way of ridding ourselves of the negativity that plagues our lives.

The town of Shawnigan, which means "Death Lake" in our mother tongue, has many cougars roaming about. When my mother and her two relatives went to this place a few years back, it inspired me to do this painting. It seemed fitting to have the spirit of the cougar watching over them.
